Industrializing the sector to transform construction
On June 9, the XI LEAN Construction 2026 Conference took place in Barcelona under the slogan “Industry and construction: Value connections”. These conferences aim to disseminate knowledge and promote the adoption of LEAN in the construction sector as one of the fundamental instruments of its transformation.
During the day, a workshop-type activity was carried out in which the attendees, divided into groups, analysed the value flow associated with the production of buildings. The exercise made it possible to identify a series of structural inefficiencies and, at the same time, to formulate proposals aimed at a profound transformation of the sector.
The main conclusion that emerges from the work is not only technical, but conceptual: the sector must move towards a logic of operation typical of an industry. This involves rethinking construction not only from how buildings are executed, but from how all agents interact along the value chain.
In this context, it is key to distinguish between two complementary but not equivalent plans. On the one hand, the industrialization of the construction sector, understood as the comprehensive improvement of the value stream. On the other hand, industrialized construction, as a specific way of executing buildings in one of the phases of the process.
