A new soft concrete to slow down planes and avoid accidents

Technological innovation in building materials is not only transforming the way we erect buildings or infrastructure: it can also save lives in sectors as critical as air transport.
A team from the China Building Materials Academy (CBMA) has developed an ultra-light and porous concrete capable of safely stopping an aircraft leaving the runway during landing. A solution that works as a “soft barrier”: it absorbs the energy of the impact, gently brakes the aircraft and prevents damage to both the fuselage and the infrastructure.
This advance represents an evolution of the Braking Systems with Engineered Materials (EMAS) already used in airports around the world. But the new “cloud concrete”, as it has been baptized for its lightness and spongy structure, offers greater reliability, lower cost and greater durability.
The key lies in the controlled weakness of the material: while conventional concrete seeks to resist, it is designed to collapse precisely under the weight of the aircraft, generating a constant and predictable deceleration.
The system has already been implemented in 14 airports in China with very positive results, even in extreme environments such as Tibet. In addition, as it uses common cement in its manufacture, it is presented as a more affordable alternative for regional airports or those with tighter budgets.
This development demonstrates how ConTech goes far beyond the construction site: research into new materials has a direct impact on the safety, sustainability and efficiency of strategic sectors. From airports to critical infrastructure, construction innovation opens the door to applications that transcend the traditional boundaries of construction.
