Barcelona City Council has announced the creation of the Barcelona Investment Fund , a venture capital fund with 30 million euros to invest in startups in strategic sectors for the city’s economy. This fund will focus on areas such as sustainability, the blue economy, creative industries, health, biotechnologies and deep tech technologies.

The council will not make direct investments in startups , but will operate under the modality of “funds of funds”, investing in private venture capital funds managed by specialized entities authorized by the CNMV. This new financial vehicle will allow investing in impact funds, which prioritize social and environmental impact, as well as in growth funds, focused on promoting companies in the growth phase.

This initiative joins other previous efforts by the city council to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem, such as the Accelera Fund and the Deep Tech Fund, both with an endowment of 10 million euros each. These funds have invested in a total of 107 startups , generating approximately 4,000 jobs in the city’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

For ConTech startups, this represents a great opportunity. Being aligned with areas such as sustainability and deep tech technologies, projects that develop innovative solutions in sustainable construction, energy efficiency and digitalization of construction processes could benefit from this new fund.
