Roof waterproofing is a key aspect in modern construction. Ensuring the watertightness of these surfaces is an ongoing challenge, especially in critical infrastructures such as data centers or sustainable buildings. In this context, SELDX, a startup member of the Barcelona ConTech Hub, is leading the change in Spain.

Water leaks on roofs can cause serious structural problems, damage to equipment and increase maintenance costs. Traditional methods such as flood tests or visual inspections are not very efficient in detecting small discontinuities in waterproofing membranes. This is where electronic leak detection (ELD) comes into play, a technology that allows faults to be identified with millimetric precision without the need for invasive methods or large logistical deployments.

The ELD method uses electric current to locate damage to the waterproofing membrane. For this system to work correctly, it is essential to have a conductive substrate under the membrane. In this sense, SELDX introduces the Controlit ® sheet in Spain, an innovative material that guarantees uniform conductivity, which allows watertightness tests to be highly effective. This solution is already being applied in the market with important advantages such as precise detection of failures, the possibility of carrying out inspections without dismantling the roof and the optimization of long-term maintenance costs.

One of the most recent cases has been the application of the system on the roof of Almirall , one of the main pharmaceutical companies in Spain. In this project, the precision of electronic leak detection is key to guaranteeing the safety and correct maintenance of the facilities, where any leakage could compromise high-value equipment and sensitive processes.
