The difficulty of keeping up with innovative construction technologies

The difficulty of keeping up with innovative construction technologiesWe have been repeating for some time that construction must be transformed. And it is not an empty sentence. We see it every day from within the Barcelona ConTech Hub: innovation is no longer optional; it is a real need if we do not want to lose competitiveness. But the truth is that keeping up with it has become one of the biggest challenges in the sector.

The speed at which new technologies emerge is overwhelming. 3D printing, advanced BIM, artificial intelligence, new materials, automation, digital platforms for project and construction management… everything seems urgent and necessary. And yet, not everything brings real value to all companies. This creates silent pressure: many organizations feel that if they don’t try every new thing, they may be left behind. It is what we know as FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), the fear of missing out on something important.

In practice, this fear can lead to not acting and becoming obsolete and losing all competitiveness or, if they do, making hasty decisions: pilot tests without a clear strategy, investments that do not fit in with the operational reality of the company, or dispersion of efforts that do not generate tangible results. Innovating out of fear rarely works.

In addition, it must be recognized: not all companies can innovate alone. Many do not have innovation departments or teams dedicated to analyzing technological solutions, or enough time to explore the market calmly. For many SMEs, day-to-day life is already a challenge; adding the pressure to “keep up” can be overwhelming.

This is precisely one of the strengths of the Barcelona ConTech Hub. Our goal is not only to become a technology showcase but also to support startups and foster innovation in construction, making it easier for disruptive ideas and solutions to develop and connect with the sector. In this context, the Hub also becomes a tool for those companies that do not have the mechanisms or resources to keep up with new technologies: it allows access to filtered and proven knowledge, tests solutions in pilot projects, and stays informed of relevant trends without having to assume all the risk alone.

Being part of a collaborative ecosystem allows you to learn from the experience of others, share risks, and maintain a clearer vision of which solutions really add value. Our active participation in the International Construction Network (ICN) as members and part of the executive board further reinforces this approach, as it allows us to compare international experiences, identify good practices, and reduce the feeling that “everything new” must be implemented immediately.

Innovating in construction is not just about running faster but about moving forward with criteria. It’s not about trying everything; it’s about choosing well. And today more than ever, this is only possible through collaboration, shared learning, and community building.

Turning the fear of being left behind into an opportunity to learn together is one of the biggest challenges—and also one of the greatest opportunities—that we have in front of us. At the Barcelona ConTech Hub, we work every day to accompany startups and companies on this path and demonstrate that innovation, well focused, can be a real driver of transformation in the sector.
