Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 on ecological design for sustainable products comes into force
On July 18 , Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 on ecological design for sustainable products entered into force.
The main objective of this new regulation is to encourage the design of products to be based on the principles of the circular economy (durability, repair and recycling) and, in this way, to reduce their environmental impact during the life cycle.
In addition, it includes a series of specific criteria for the prevention, collection, classification and recycling of waste, paying special attention to those derived from the textile and electronic sectors.
The products of the construction sector work with their own decree, but this is applied to them in a complementary way by adding the following characteristics:
- Uses less energy
- It lasts longer
- It can be easily repaired
- Parts can be easily disassembled and used
- It contains fewer substances of concern
- It can be easily recycled
- Contains more recycled content
- It has a smaller carbon and environmental footprint throughout its life cycle
- Digital Product Passport
In summary, this regulation is a very significant step on a European scale for the circular and sustainable economy and reaffirms its commitment to the environment.
