Project of floating photovoltaic plants in the ponds of Alfés and AlcanóThe project for floating photovoltaic plants in the Alfés and Alcanó ponds is part of the plan to improve energy self-consumption and the decarbonization of irrigation of the Segarra-Garrigues System, which is being developed by the company Aigües del Segarra Garrigues, S.A. It is a pioneering and innovative initiative in Catalonia that takes advantage of existing infrastructures in sector 12 to generate renewable energy using FPV (floating photovoltaic) technology. The facilities, built between 2025 and 2026, are currently in the pre-commissioning phase, pending final permits.

The Alfés plant, with a surface area of 0.99 hectares, located in pond 240 of sector 12.1, is designed to supply the EB2 pumping station with an installed capacity of 1,680 kWp, the result of an adaptation due to environmental limitations. The system is based on 2,800 bifacial modules mounted on a modular floating structure that reduces water evaporation and optimizes energy production in periods of greater irrigation demand. The configuration includes central inverter, transformer center, overhead medium voltage line with bird protection devices, and advanced monitoring system for remote control and operation.

For its part, the Alcanó plant with a surface area of 0.45 hectares that feeds the EB3 pumping station, located in pond 237 of sector 12.2, has an installed power of 748.8 kWp, with a similar technical configuration adapted to its operational needs. This facility integrates 1,248 bifacial modules, four independent inverters, a transformer center, and an energy evacuation by means of an underground medium-voltage line. As in Alfés, the system has been designed to maximise the self-consumption associated with the Segarra-Garrigues System, and reduce the environmental impact, especially in SPA areas.

Together, both plants will generate more than 3.5 GWh of renewable energy per year, contributing significantly to the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the energy supply of the equivalent of around 1,500 homes. The implementation of this technology demonstrates the feasibility of floating photovoltaics in modern irrigation systems, making energy production, hydraulic infrastructure optimization and environmental protection compatible, with prospects of expansion to other ponds in the system.
