Bloc-Replastic project: concrete blocks with plastic waste

Bloc-Replastic project: concrete blocks with plastic waste

Its objective is to obtain a prototype of a precast block made of concrete containing plastic waste that, due to its cost, aesthetics and technical performance, can be advantageously positioned in the market. The project covers the selection of the optimal type of waste, the detailed definition of the industrial manufacturing process, the testing program and the certification of the final product.

Introduction of recycled materials in the database of a public developer

Introduction of recycled materials in the database of a public developer

A public developer uses a construction database that has been prepared by ITeC and has requested an extended version of the database that must include recycled building materials and materials that have been manufactured with a part of recycled raw material. Like the rest of the materials in the database, the new additions have reference prices, spec sheets and environmental data, so that they can be added effortlessly to any new building project.

Feasibility of replacing natural aggregates with recycled aggregates

Feasibility of replacing natural aggregates with recycled aggregates

The study analyzes whether it would be plausible to cover 5% of the total aggregate consumption in construction, urbanization and civil engineering works with recycled aggregate. To do this, it has been necessary to estimate how much aggregate is required in a sample of projects and to identify in which elements it could be replaced by recycled aggregate without breaking any construction codes. Once the viability has been confirmed on the demand side, it has also been verified on the offer side.

Addition of the

Addition of the "Recycled Content" parameter to the BEDEC database

The BEDEC database of construction products already informed of environmental data such as energy consumed in manufacture, CO2 emissions and packaging waste, and the next addition has been the percentage of recycled content. The purpose is to highlight those products that have been manufactured from recycled materials, as an incentive for their prescription. A distinction is made between the percentage recycled in pre-consumption and in post-consumption.

Use of steel slag as aggregate in road works

Use of steel slag as aggregate in road works

Before accepting a steel slag aggregate for a civil engineering project, the developers want to verify whether it is valid to use it as gravel and type-2 selected soil according to the Spanish Road Building Code. It has been checked for compliance with the national regulations of civil works (particle size and geometry, water absorption and wear resistance, SO3 content, quality of fines, Los Angeles coefficient) and the requirements for hazardous substances (leaching of heavy metals)

Mastic asphalt (Gussasphalt) with crumb rubber from end-of-life tires

Mastic asphalt (Gussasphalt) with crumb rubber from end-of-life tires

Experimental test campaign to measure the effects of adding recycled rubber dust to the mix for manufacturing mastic asphalt. Since mastic asphalt is not just a material for building wearing surfaces but is also used in waterproofing applications, special care has been taken to assess how the change in composition affects its reaction to water and water vapour.

Competitive environment of a series of aggregate recycling plants

Competitive environment of a series of aggregate recycling plants

The client has a number of ongoing and planned recycling facilities and wants to evaluate which of them are located on markets with an advantageous (or disadvantageous) position in regard to the local offer of natural aggregates. A zone of influence has defined around each plant, identifying the presence of natural aggregate producers, their production volumes, product types and prices.

Potential of a granular waste to be used as material for controlled landfills

Potential of a granular waste to be used as material for controlled landfills

A chemical industry produces granular waste and wants to check if it could be reused as land filler material for the earthworks in a building site close to the factory. ITeC has taken samples from the company's stockpiles and has prescribed the appropriate tests to classify the material in accordance with current regulations. Based on the results, it has issued a verdict on the types of situations where it might be legally admissible.

Paving of rural roads with slag concrete: analysis of an experimental stretch

Paving of rural roads with slag concrete: analysis of an experimental stretch

Paving an experimental stretch of country road, with different alternatives: concrete and gravel-cement using slag of different sizes sourced from incinerator waste, chosen after the characterization analysis performed on the waste.

Recycling packaging waste for thermal insulation purposes

Recycling packaging waste for thermal insulation purposes

Construction sites produce a large amount of waste from packaging, which is mostly low density. The study analyses the potential to reuse this waste to insulate the cavity walls of building facades, after a proper crushing and mixing. This is a viable option both in terms of logistics and of performance, since the availability of this type of waste is enough to match the volume of walls to insulate.
