Concrete is the most widely used material in construction. Cement, its main ingredient, is responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions and is classified as carcinogenic by the WHO. Additionally, the additives used in conventional concrete can be highly toxic.
Eco concrete replaces, one by one, every synthetic or toxic ingredient in conventional concrete for a biobased one. The result is an alternative concrete with equal or better mechanical performance, minimal environmental impact and zero toxicity for users.
All ingredients are 100% biobased. The necessary cooking temperatures are reduced by 50%, making the production costs and embedded carbon much smaller. The removal of concrete allows to safely use vegetable fibers as internal reinforcement rather tan metals or plastic.
Most civil infrastructure around the world is structurally unsafe. As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of natural hazards, many civil infrastructures are not robust enough to cope with severe, violent or unpredictable weather.
Aiming to prevent safety and economic risks, the product consists of an IoT solution that uses AI and predictive analysis to monitor in real time the structural health of infrastructures. The sensors used base the predictions on infrastructure health and geotechnical movement.
The low-power wireless devices are best-in-class in terms of range and reliability. The IoT solution is supported by a maintenance app that provides access to other useful services such as emergency response.
It is estimated that people spend 80-90% of their time indoors, and indoor air is typically 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air (even in cities). Poor IAQ (indoor air quality) is among the world’s top 10 causes of mortality and breathing clean, healthy air is a fundamental human right.
This enterprise proposes the creation of a new IAQ label for air quality-related equipment to ease access to healthier technological solutions. A specialized lab will be built in order to carry out the certification process and increase the IAQ research ecosystem.
The heart of the project is the construction of the company’s own lab in Barcelona, where the certification process will be carried out. It will also be an asset to be used by research centers and it will serve as a strategic point of knowledge generation. This will not only increase the research ecosystem in the city but will set them at the heart of it.
Achieving climate neutrality calls for an improvement in the operational impact of buildings. In order to attain the EU climate objectives, energy performance requirements are becoming more and more demanding, which will have to be followed by an improvement in the performance of building components.
This envelope system counts with its proprietary mortar formulation that allows for any building built with this system to automatically get the highest energy performance qualification and comply with Passivhaus energetic requirements. All materials used are mineral and recyclable to minimize CO2 impact.
This is the only prefabricated solution in Europe that serves as structural panel for 10-story constructions. Once installed, the system is indistinguishable from traditional construction, making the transition from conventional to industrialized building all that easier.
Given that 40% of the building stock was built before 1960 and 85% before 1990, improving the energy efficiency of buildings requires extensive renovation and refurbishment actions. The key to achieving these goals is to understand how to select the adequate technologies to optimize the performance of prefabricated components according to building type, location and climate.
The solution proposed is a prefabricated envelope system that’s adaptable to any design for energy rehabilitation of buildings. Following circular design, the panels are dismountable and use low impact materials. The manufacturing process has been optimized to minimize energy demand, lower waste generation and eliminate water consumption.
Digital twin is incorporated in the manufacturing process, construction and operational life so that the system can be adapted and optimized for any application. In addition, it incorporates sensors –to automatically open windows, for example- so that the anatomy of the envelope adapts to climatic conditions.
Construction is a highly regulated field where numerous certifications are demanded. The technical requirements in buildings have increased notably in recent years and the market is becoming more and more competitive from an environmental, technical and economic point of view.
By combining light steel and concrete, this prefabricated precast slab offers a notably better weight/performance ratio than any other classic precast concrete slab. The industrialization of the product brings with it all the classic benefits like improved precision, reduced waste and controlled manufacturing.
The precast does not need to be sealed. You can walk over it and lay the formwork without needing to place props, which notably reduces execution time. In mixed steel-concrete structures, additional connectors are usually needed. Here, the cast is used to penetrate the perforations of the lateral nerves of the steel slab, providing this union without the need for additional connectors.
The construction sector has evolved to adapt to a new scenario in which immediacy, adaptability and sustainability are essential characteristics for survival. One of the trends that has emerged due to this new context is modular construction, one of the most popular alternatives to leave behind harmful traditional construction techniques.
In response to the current market needs, the developed product is a set of digitalized modules. The company has several decades of experience in the manufacturing of sandwich panels. This has enabled them to incorporate into these modules all of the technology used in their roof, wall and floor solutions. As a result, the product ensures great thermal and acoustic performance.
The product incorporates a digitalization system that consists of a plugin which uses modules and BIM objects that incorporate smart properties which allow to carry out execution (4D), cost (5D) and environmental (6D) analysis. This plugin can operate at 3 levels: BIM object, module and project as a whole.
Lives are at stake when large-scale civil infrastructures fail us. It is estimated that every dollar dedicated to making infrastructure more resilient generates $4 of economic value, thus real time monitoring is strongly needed.
Using predictive analysis and wireless network, this event detection device takes periodic reading of the state of the voussoirs and sends an alert whenever the set threshold is breached so that decisions can be taken quickly.
The wireless device is integrated directly into the concrete cast, adding no extra difficulty to the construction process. It is prepared to be integrated into any third-party software so that it is compatible with all warning systems.
Construction is one of the most polluting and least digitized industries globally. The evolution towards a cleaner and more sustainable construction requires a greater use of digital tools that facilitate the management of the multiple processes of a project.
The proposed product is the creation of a digital tool that measures sustainability parameters (carbon footprint, efficient use of resources, efficient water management, adaptation to climate change, life cycle cost) throughout the entire life cycle of the building, from the extraction of materials to demolition.
The tool creates a Digital Twin of the building from all types of entries, from a Revit model to a budget, thus anticipating the low digitization of the sector. In addition, it will be powered by the richest international environmental database.
