Wood-based substrate fire protected with fire-retardant System of INTUMESCENT SYSTEMS LTD.

The company Intumescent Systems Ltd has obtained three ETAs (ETA 23/0387, ETA 23/0388 and ETA 23/0389) for their fire-retardant paints used on wood-based substrates.

The ETAs cover three fire-retardant systems: ES/VFR/C (ETA 23/0387), ES/VFR/W (ETA 23/0388) and HW02E (ETA 23/0389). Each of these three systems are also put on the market under other trade names, which are specified in their respective ETAs.

The three systems are water-based intumescent coatings designed to reduce the ignitability of wood-based boards, applied by brush, roller or spray gun on wood-based substrates; they are applied together with a primer and a topcoat to make up coating systems.

The three systems are used as fire retardant products to improve the reaction to fire performance of a wood-based substrate surfaces of a construction product, excluding floorings.

The ETA for each fire-retardant system specifies the primers and topcoats that make up the system, the conditions of the wood-based substrate (thickness and density), and the paint weight needed on each layer of the system (primer, paint and topcoat).

All three fire-retardant systems have been assessed for use category Type Z₂, defined as internal conditions with humidity lower than 85 % R.H., excluding temperatures below 0°C, in accordance with EAD 350865-00-1106, section 1.2.1.
